How long should side effects from antidepressants take to go away?
January 312010
I have been taking a new AD for 4 days, I am sooo hungry all the time. It is scaring me. I am also tired and grumpy and a little sad. I am not yet at the therapeutic dose. How long should I wait before deciding to quit? Also, before going on this new medication, I was on a different one which I stopped and replaced with the new one. I wonder if I am having some withdrawal from the first med? I am follwing doctors orders.
I stopped taking Wellbutrin XL300 mg and started taking Cymbalta 30 mgs. There was no tapering of the Wellbutrin, I just substituted one pill for the other. I am wondering if that could be a problem.
I would give it at least 3 weeks to a month before completely giving up. The possibility of withdrawals is certainly viable, and in which case, you should speak to your doctor about that ASAP. Did your doc taper you off the old med and gradually increase the new one? For me, the side effects of a new antidepressants usually go away within the first month. If the side effects are absolutely unbearable, do call your doctor and get his/her instructions.

I think your doctor probably should have tapered you. I was once switched from Wellbutrin XR to Cymbalta and I had some pretty bad withdrawals even with the tapering. So, I would definitely call your doctor and ask about that. Also, you may want to call a pharmacist first and ask them if they think you should have been transitioned to the cymbalta more slowly. Then you can let your doctor know that is what a pharmacist told you.

Your new medication may actually make you thirsty, and you may be interpreting this as hunger. If you would start a new regime of drinking something like ‘Propel Fitness Water", on a daily basis, you might find that you are not nearly as ‘hungry’ feeling. Lack of having enough water can make you grumpy and tired, as well. If your medication is doing what it is prescribed to do, I would not be thinking about how long to stay on it, but, how well it works while you are taking it! Do not stop the medication when you think you feel just fine. You, probably, will feel just fine, because you ARE on the medication! If you stop the medication, before the doctor wants you to do so, you will go back to feeling very depessed, right away. Just continue to follow the doctor’s orders, and do make certain that you are drinking enough of the water!
