Ritalin is not a treatment for depression. Ritalin is used to treat ADHD and it has a fairly good safety record. However, it has a few stimulant side effects which include depression, sleeping disorder and headache. Increasing dosages and frequent episodes of bingeing, followed by severe depression are symptoms of Ritalin abuse and addiction. If used as prescripted, Ritalin does not cause any addiction.
References :
I have never take Ritalin, but is is essentially methamphetamine and yes, it is addictive. I would strongly recommend that you try some of the typical antidepressants before you try speed. St. John's wort is an over the counter medication that works well for mild depression; other than that, talk to your doctor. There are a lot of different types of antidepressants on the market. Be aware, it can take as long as 3 months for them to be effective, as they need to create new synaptic pathways in the brain and it takes a while for them to develop.

For the 'zombie' effect, that is only for people who have ADD/ADHD. For everyone else, speed makes you more hyper and pumped up. Due to the brain chemistry of people with ADHD, who have abnormal wiring, speed calms them down and makes them more 'normal'. Giving them too high of a dosage of speed calms them too much, causing them to seem like zombies. My stepson has ADHD and the medication he is on (Adderall) contains methamphetamine, and we had to up the dosage to get him to the point where he can sit still long enough to fulfill his homework and reading requirements.
References :
I took Ritalin for like a month and didn't find it addictive. I was taking a fairly low dose, though, and under the supervision of a psychiatrist. My understanding is that it can be somewhat addicitve, and you should be careful.

Treating depression with stimulants strikes me as somewhat odd because stimulants like Ritalin work by increasing the levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine in the brain, and many antidepressants increase the levels of those neurotransmitters as well as several others. Is this something you've been discussing with a psychiatrist, or something you've come up with through your own research? If your psychiatrist recommends it, then I'd have to say you should go for it. However, if it's just something you've read on the internet, well, there's a lot of BS information on the internet.

PS. The "zombie" side-effects only occur if you're taking too high a dose :)
