Singer Michael due to be sentenced! What punishment does George Michael deserve?

March 82010

Singer George Michael has arrived at court to be sentenced for driving while unfit.

The star has admitted the offence, claiming he was guilty due to "tiredness and prescribed drugs".

He arrived at Brent Magistrates’ Court in north London wearing a dark suit and sunglasses to hear what his sentence will be.

At an earlier hearing, the court heard that Michael, 43, had a cocktail of drugs in his system including GHB and cannabis.

He was found slumped at the wheel of his Mercedes in Cricklewood, north London, on October 1 last year.

Prosecutors told the court that tests showed a therapeutic quantity of an anti-depressant in the singer’s system as well as illegal dance club drug GHB – a class C substance – but Michael’s defence counsel said GHB could be present in the blood without any illegal substances having been taken.
To those among you who are going to his concert on Sunday night – I would suggest you boycott it! He has committed a crime and should not be supported! He deserves a heavy prison sentence with no favours! Unfortunately he will probably end up with a paltry fine! One law for the rich and one for the poor!
100 Hours Community Service For Shamed Pop Star
(Friday June 08, 2007 12:50 AM)

Pop star George Michael has been sentenced to 100 hours community service after he admitted driving under the influence of drugs. The 43-year-old pop star was also banned from driving for two years.

Speaking after the case, Michael said he was glad to put it behind him and accepted "full responsibility" for his actions.

He told reporters: "I am glad to put this behind me and now I’m off to do the biggest show of my life."

The sentence was handed down the day before the singer is due to play the first concert at the new Wembley stadium.

Michael had pleaded guilty to drug-driving at Brent Magistrates’ Court last month.

The singer was arrested in Cricklewood, north London, after motorists reported a car obstructing the road at traffic lights.

He was found slumped at the wheel of his Mercedes with a cocktail of legal and illegal drugs in his system.
The former Wham! star, whose birth name is George Panayiotou, pleaded guilty "due to tiredness and prescription drugs".

He told the court: "I was ashamed I had done something really wrong in putting other people at risk."

His lawyer, Brian Spiro, said: "He now fully accepts to have got into the car on that occasion, given his tiredness, given the medication he had been given was the wrong, improper thing to do."

Since his guilty plea, Michael has admitted an addiction to prescription drugs during a TV interview with Michael Parkinson.

He also told the presenter he believed the world would be a better place if more people smoked marijuana.

The outspoken star is currently on a European and UK tour which includes Saturday’s concert at Wembley.
THE ABOVE REPORT SAYS IT ALL – a driving ban will not harm him as he no doubt has a full-time chauffeur! 100 hours community service – he will be followed by the press and this will become a media circus!

He should have been imprisoned and his concert cancelled – how many people lose their jobs through criminal activities? This sentence just proves the point – the more you are in the public limelight the more you can escape justice!

I AM TOTALLY DISGUSTED WITH OUR LEGAL SYSTEM!

100hrs community sentence, that’s really going to make him change his ways. Instead they should have taken all the profits from his Wembley concert, that would have made him think twice next time.

I think a short prison sentence is appropriate here. Although in saying that, community service has done wonders for other celebrities. He could have seriously hurt someone and even killed them and he needs to realise the errors of his ways

as long as hes not imprisoned-im going to see him tomorrow!

i do think he needs punishment, for his own sake-he is out of control. i dont think smoking cannnabis is wrong but i would never never drive after having a smoke!!!!!! it does affect your judgement. plus when he said last year after being caught cheating again that he would just give kenny a million and he would be fine. either he is with him for his money in that case or george is just deluding himself and is in danger of losing him.

He has already been punished. His parents didn’t give him a last name. Who does he think he is teaming up with Elton John and singing a song about incest? "Don’t let the son go down on me" Yeah put him behind bars.

He should spend some time in jail. I used to like George Michael, but his increasing arrogance just irritates now. He needs to grow up and act his age.

As much as I like and admire George Michael I don’t think he deserves any leniency. It’s not like the sex issue in the washroom or whatever…This time he really could have hurt somebody. A car is a powerful machine…he should not have been behind the wheel, endangering other’s lives.

He deserves a very stern punishment because this is not his first offence, however, money buys justice in his case and i doubt that he will serve time.
I think they should give him the maximum, but chances are he will get rehab and a fine.
I cant stand this guy because he is arrogant and needs to be taught a lesson

His attitude towards Drugs stinks. I have seen too many lives ruined by the use of Drugs, even Cannabis can screw people up, and George Michael openly endorses its use.
    Shame on him.

he will get a fine and probably a lengthy driving ban between 1 and 2 years. the same as a normal member of the public would. Which is fair. To say that sentences should be changed simply because he has been successful is utterly stupid. The magistrates have a simple table for driving offences, crime on one side, ban length on the other, the fine is linked to income. They have to stick to this with almost no flexibility and it will give a list of the crime, then the level of intoxication will be used to determine the length of his ban.

Yes a fine may mean nothing to him, as it wouldn’t to anyone who earns over 40k pa which is many people famous or not. He can afford to get a driver as well. But if Average Joe was quite wealthy and had a ban for 12 points for being caught speeding then he would get the same, but he might be quite wealthy and either through specialist insurance (you can get insurance in case you are banned which gives you a driver for the length of the ban), personal finance or your job, you could get a driver but you wouldn’t have the case broadcast to the world. If he gets a fine and ban then it is fair. he didn’t hurt anyone and the ban will stop him going behind the wheel for a while.

He is not likely to be treated as leniently as Paris and spend half a day in prison then sent home in case he feels homesick. The whole issue of punishing the famous is becoming a big joke meaning they can now get away with anything they want. Bet it will be a few hours community work like licking envelopes.

There is no point sentancing him. He can just say he doesn’t feel well and go home!
