Trauma Therapy: Problem Geography

April 152010

To contact Robert Rhoton PsyD or for more information, visit http://aztraumatherapy.com.

One of the things that are really important in therapy is that we have an understanding for whats really happening. What that takes is an understanding of the problem geography. I’m using geography as the metaphor of the problem at hand.

If you think about geography you want to know about the latitude and longitude, the weather, what kind of fauna is growing there, who lives there and you want to know the basics of what is going on in that geographic region.

If you’re having anxiety we might say that that is a desert problem for you and your geography is like a desert. Another person might have anxiety that is an arctic problem.

One of the things that often times happens is that people start therapy too soon and they try to apply polar bear, penguin intervention to a desert problem.

My goal is to make sure that I understand the geography of your situation before we ever start to intervene in it.

The better we can come to an understanding for the geography before we begin treatment, the faster and more efficient therapy is for most people and it actually ends up saving the patient time and money and we can have efforts that are really focused on what we need to accomplish.

What therapeutic use is made of α-hydroxy acids?

April 62010

A)_ reduction of skin pigmentation
B)_fever reduction
C)_sunscreen
D)_antibiotic
E)_ulcer treatment

A reduction of skin pigmentation.

They are normally used in chemical peels, but in higher concentrations they can be used to treat skin conditions like acne or photo-damage (such as mottled dyspigmentation, melasma or fine wrinkles).

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_hydroxy_acid
"α-hydroxy acids, or alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), are a class of chemical compounds that consist of a carboxylic acid substituted with a hydroxy group on the adjacent carbon. They may be either naturally occurring or synthetic. AHAs are well-known for their use in the cosmetics industry. They are often found in products claiming to reduce wrinkles or the signs of aging, and improve the overall look and feel of the skin. They are also used as chemical peels available in a dermatologist’s office, beauty and health spas and home kits, which usually contain a lower concentration[specify]. Although their effectiveness is documented numerous cosmetic products have appeared on the market with unfounded claims of performance. Many well-known α-hydroxy acids are useful building blocks in organic synthesis: the most common and simple are glycolic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, mandelic acid….

At higher concentrations, 50 – 70% applied for 3 to 8 minutes under the supervision of a physician, glycolic acid promotes slitting between the cells and can be used to treat acne or photo-damage (such as mottled dyspigmentation, melasma or fine wrinkles). The benefits from such short contact application (chemical peels) depend on the pH of the solution (the more acidic the product, or lower pH, the more pronounced the results), the concentration of GA (higher concentrations produce more vigorous response), the length of application and prior skin conditioning such as prior use of topical vitamin A products. Although single application of 50 – 70% GA will produce beneficial results, multiple treatments every 2 to 4 weeks are required for optimal results. It is important to understand that glycolic acid peels are chemical peels with similar risks and side effects as other peels. Some of the side effects of AHAs chemical peeling can include hyper-pigmentation, persistent redness, scarring as well as flare up of facial herpes infections ("cold sores")."

Spirit Horse Therapeutic Riding Center 2

April 62010

SpiritHorse Therapeutic provides free therapeutic horseback riding services to over 450 children and adults from ten counties in the Greater Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex each week at our facilities in Corinth, just north of Dallas, Texas. We currently serve more children than any center in the world. We are unique in that SpiritHorse is the only large center in America that provides all private therapeutic horseback riding services free of charge in our six programs: Disabilities, Children who are Victims of Abuse/Violence, At-Risk-Youth, Battered Women, and Youth After-Drug Rehab. Our mission is, “To Assist Each Child with Special Needs in Reaching Their Full Potential through Interaction with Horses”.

We also have as a mission: “A kind, rewarding home for older show horses and ponies, loving care, and proper burial on our ranch when they pass on.”

More than 700 centers in the United States provide recreational therapy, typically in group lessons. A much smaller number provide hippotherapy which is provided by occupational or physical therapists using the horse as a modality. A small number provide equine facilitated mental health, using the horse to foster relationship building and problem solving.

SpiritHorse provides what it terms equine-assisted healthcare, which is has a different goal than that of recreational therapy. It includes, for example, eleven specific methods provided in a one-on-one setting for intervening with its 165 children who have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. We have developed an instructor as our autism specialist, following the lead of the mainstream medical community who substantially advanced the state-of-the-art in medicine when they developed pediatricians, oncologists, orthopedists, neurologists, and other specialists.

Edgar Cayce Therapeutic Touch Healing

April 32010

Edgar Cayce’s approach to staying well had its roots in health maintenance and preventive medicine rather than in the treatment of illnesses as they arose. Yet, his contribution to healing and physical well-being was not limited solely to proper diet and regular exercise.

Cayce also saw total health as involving coordination among the physical, mental, and spiritual components of life. Any complete approach to health needed to consider an individual’s entire being rather than simply the illness. Because of this concept, it has been said that the beginnings of present-day holistic health started from the readings of Edgar Cayce.

Trauma Therapy: Initiating A Therapeutic Relationship

March 312010

To contact Robert Rhoton PsyD or for more information, visit http://aztraumatherapy.com.

There are several items that have to be involved in the therapeutic process.

1. You have to believe strongly that people are a lot more then they present themselves to you. The person sitting or standing before you may not present all they are or can be.

2. I believe that it is important that people have a sense that they can improve and that they have hope.

3. The third element is an acceptance that all of the things people do fall into a range of what human beings can do.
