What are the threats to the Physical Therapy profession?

March 102010

With an increasing number of demand for therapeutic services with a lack of DPT professionals to provide this service how will these demands be met?

More use of PT assistants?
Physiotherapists?
DCs?
Massage Therapists?

Will the trend go in favor of "cheaper" therapeutic alternatives while the DPT profession decreases in value due to their high costs? How will health care reform affect DPT reimbursement in the future? How will it affect the PTA profession?

On the outside it looks as if the PT profession is very bright. But what if there is a more "Universal Health care" system that arises from this economic crisis. Obama has mentioned health care reform as a primary issue. How do you see the PT profession ten and twenty years from now?

I agree with Mistify. I will add that there is an increased demand for PTs as the population ages and the premature infants that are born earlier and earlier. An increase in PTAs are a good thing. PT should be the primary person in musc-skeletal problems.

I do not see PT going away. I think another big threat is ATC used as PTA. This is not legal but happens. PT are getting more efficient with evidence based medicine. Patients are getting better sooner. We also need to empower our paitents to take ownership on their rehab.

Poll for men and women- Massage therapy?

March 82010

Does it matter to you whether the person giving the massage is male or female? Do you have a preference, or would you NOT pay for a massage from a male?

Please, no dumb, obvious sexual comments. This is a question about legitimate stress/therapeutic massage.

I would definitely pay for a therapeutic massage from either male or female. My friend’s uncle is a massage therapist and he is VERY good. I have lower back trouble and he helped with the pain just as well as, if not better than, the female massage therapist I’ve seen.

Is there a cure for Intercostal Fibrositis?

March 62010

I live in the Philippines. I’m only 22 yrs. old and for almost 3 years now,I’ve been suffering from this muscular affliction on my intercostal muscles, as well as on my left shoulder. This is all due to a certain abusive habit which is obviously impossible to explain here. I just want to know what could reverse the Fibrositic Nodules or Trigger Points that have developed on my chest and shoulder muscles. I need help because the doctors here just simply dismiss my condition as a mental illness. If these palpable nodules of tightened muscles are not reversed, there’s no way my fibromyalgic sufferings will end. Other than therapeutic massage, what other treatments do you think could really promote healing and lead to a cure of my condition? And, do you know if Stem Cell Therapy has already cured this kind of affliction? I need help….

Is intercostal fibrositis (I’ve never heard of it) somehow related to fibromyalgia? It sounds like a fancy way of saying you have knots in your muscles around your ribs! In that case it’s not a real medical condition and nothing to lose sleep over, other than you want it to get better because it is painful and annoying
Fibromyalgia is real, but there is no test and no real medical treatment for it. You can help it much with massage, chiropractic, light exercise, vitamin supplements, stop smoking and stress control!!!
What "abusive habit" are you talking about? Were you abused as a child or are you talking about masturbation? That would be hilarious if you thought that was the cause, and of course masturbation can cause nothing like this.
Best luck. David.

Pregnancy and joint pain, PLEASE HELP!?

March 22010

I have been having severe pain in my SI joint and problems with sciatica for about 2 months now. It started at work ( I work as a CNA in a nursing home), so it’s questionable as to whether this is a work related accident or just normal pregnancy pain. I went to physical therapy and was given exercises to do in order to strengthen my lower back, and was told there is no need to come back unless my sciatica is acting up then she does a therapeutic massage and this helps. Well my question is would it help to take a glucosamine chondrotine supplement? Would it be safe for my baby? The pain is unbearable, when I move in bed my back pops and cracks. My dr gave me vicodin, but that barely takes the edge off the pain. I am making an appointment with a chiropracter this monday, and unfortunetely due to my pregnancy, I can’t have x-rays done of my pelvis until after I deliver in July. For those that don’t know the SI joint is the sacroilliac joint that connects the sacram (base of the spine composed of 5 fused vertebrae) and the pelvis.

i have sciatica too it starts at my lower back and goes down my right leg it sucks! , i dont think u can take glucosamine, but this is def a question for your DR. i went to a chiropractor , and he has me stretch everyday and use a heating pad to relieve the pain, thats all you can really do. i also used icy hott patches at work, i was on my feet for 9 hours a day 40 hours a week.

am i being realistic ?

February 282010

Ive only just started high school, but family and friends are making such a big deal about what I’m doing with my life, Sure my grades aren’t as good as they should be, & I’m in Applied courses, I’m cutting myself short, and like most Teenagers my age, i don’t attend classes everyday, sometimes there are days in which id just rather Stay home and Rest. My goal for the new year is to Be more responsible, I’ve made myself a plan for the future, in the beginning it consisted of staying in Canada, Take up a Part time job later this year to pay for College, Finish high school, (Stay an extra year, to get extra Credits), move into a Condo/Apartment in Burlington, go to Canadian Therapeutic College, and after my two year course, i would move to wear ever i had a Placement to work.

But i want to get as far away as i can, My father completely despises me, & is already talking about kicking me out when I’m 18, Ive done nothing to Deserve this, and they’ve done everything to loose my trust and Respect.
Im just looking at other Possibilities, and Ive come up with an Idea, If i were to go to California they have an outstanding institute to practice massage therapy, and my salary in the USA is 30x higher than my salary would be if i Worked here in Ontario.
This sounded like a good decision at first, but there is so much more to think about, when im thinking about the whole image.
first) I would most definitely have to bring a friend with me, someone i can depend on, someone i can go out with, & someone to split the rent with.
second) The rent, Not only do i have to pay for College, i have to pay for Rent, and possibly a Car
third) To go to college in the usa, you have to get Accepted, here in Canada you don’t, you just pay & learn, so there is always the Chance i don’t get accepted, seeing as my grades aren’t great and i would have a High school diploma from Canada.
forth) Immigration from Canada to Usa.

Is following my Dreams in the California, to much ? am i being Realistic?
I dont hang out with the wrong crowd, i just have to get up at 6 am to catch the bus for school at 6 40, and i end up missing it, or get overwhelmed by school work, stay up to late, and cant get up in the morning.

OMG i am so like you

but the bead thing about it all is that we want more than we’re prepared to give..
i mean…everyone does right? just lay around etc and wait for the knowledge to come to us..
but i know that wont happen..

it is realistic that u might get accepted to a uni in cali…but it depends on ur grades…
and to get good grades u need to actually not laze around..like me :P and go to school.
this is so easy to be said, rather then done..
I KNOW..
i used to be a generally good student until i got pregnant, and had my on recently..
it was a lot of work in school, and getting my self fit for the baby etc
but somehow i am managing..yes i have stopped with my dream about modeling, after a few catwalks even versace..but my twin sister is carrying on with that now so i bless her..and wish her THEE best

but i recently realized so much how education is worth it..after all i am only 15 right now,but i have a son to look after not off my parents’ money in 10 years but mine.
now i am doing great,my parents are amazing, they can afford it so they pay everything for it all..
but i know that will have to change…whether i actually want it or not..they give me extra credit for many things, but later i will be a grown WOMAN with a child, therefore manage on my own..

try concentrating on something important to you..and maybe u dont know it yet..i dont really..so i try doing good in all subjects…and physics and chemistry are NOt the good areas for me AT ALL :P

i hope u find whatt ur looking for..good luck :)

What should I do?

February 262010

I am currently in college studying Respiratory Therapy and I just don’t think it’s really for me. It’s a really hard program, much harder than it needs to be due to the instructor (who is also the program chair) having an superiority complex! I hate her!!! I just really also don’t know if I want to be dealing with phlegm, snot, and mucus for the rest of my life. I know the salary is good but I also want to be happy. So here are my choices: Physical Therapy assistant, Rad Tech, Radiation Therapy, RN, or Therapeutic massage. Or should I just stick it out with Respiratory Therapist?? If you have any info on any of these occupations and what they pay, I would really like to hear it please. Thanks
Okay maybe not so much an RN because I read they have to go to school for a long time and deal with blood and gross stuff.

I am a Respiratory Therapist of 4 years and it does get easier. Before I graduated my teacher told me to my dismay that I would be a "bad" therapist. After a couple of years and after becoming a Registered respiratory therapist and a couple of other advanced certifications I realized that my teacher was just trying to motivate me. In RT school some teachers try to break you down to see how you do under pressure. I used my teachers negative comments as a motiviation to prove him wrong.
Trust me, Respiratory is a great field, but is not easy or for the weak minded. Whats great about RT is the atonomy, you are not constiantly at the bed side like nursing. Your like a clinical consultant. The secretion thing will get easier in time. The hardest period in my respiratory carrer was while in school. They intentionally make it hard in school because you don’t use half of the information once you get out. Trust me, stick with it, it will get easier once you graduate.
